Protecting Your Smile and Bite: The Importance of Retainers

At Foote Orthodontics in Bryn Mawr and Wayne, PA, we love helping patients achieve the smiles they’ve always wanted. However, maintaining that beautiful smile and a healthy bite doesn’t end when orthodontic treatment is complete. Retainers are a crucial part of this journey, essential for protecting the alignment of your teeth and the health of your bite over time. Consistently wearing retainers every night ensures that your teeth remain in place and prevents unwanted shifts that can compromise both aesthetics and functionality.

Why are retainers so important? After orthodontic treatment, teeth naturally tend to shift back toward their original positions, a phenomenon known as “orthodontic relapse.” By wearing retainers nightly, you actively prevent this movement, maintaining the alignment that was carefully achieved during treatment. Retainers aren’t only about aesthetics; they also help sustain the integrity of your bite, supporting your long-term oral health by keeping the teeth and jaw in proper alignment.

At Foote Orthodontics, we provide patients with four sets of retainers at the end of their treatment, a step that sets up long-term protection. Each set is designed to last between 3-5 years when kept clean, dry, and well-maintained. However, some patients like changing retainers every 1-2 years.  Over time, wear and tear, along with natural bacterial buildup, can reduce a retainer’s effectiveness, making regular replacement a smart choice for continued support.

We know that keeping retainers updated and accessible is essential, so we created the Foote Orthodontics Retainer Club. As a member, you can order additional retainers easily using the scan we keep on file from your “debond” (treatment completion) appointment, making it convenient to get replacements without needing an extra visit. Our retainer replacement options include:

  • 2 sets of retainers at debond
  • 4 sets of retainers at debond
  • 4 sets of retainers after debond

By investing in a retainer plan, you’re not only protecting your smile but also your overall health. Retainers support your bite stability, which has lasting effects on oral health, reducing strain on the jaw, preventing tooth wear, and contributing to better breathing and speech function. For those who have experienced teeth grinding or jaw clenching, consistent retainer use can also help manage these issues by keeping the jaw in proper alignment and providing additional stability.
